Voting for this years Billabong XXL nominees took place yesterday in California with surfing legends Mickey Munoz and Mark “Occy” Occhilupo being involved in the process. This year the UK and Ireland have featured heavily following the huge swell at Mullaghmore County Sligo, Ireland on March 08th 2012.
Northcore Europe were there to capture the action at Mullaghmore to produce their award nominated short film “Fathoms Left to Fall” and two of the production crew for the film have been honoured with shortlisted entries in Billabong XXL after submitting both stills and video from the day.
The Director of photography for “Fathoms Left to Fall”, Mark Waters, submitted video footage for the Biggest Wave category which features in the film, of Lahinch man, Ollie O’Flaherty being towed into an absolute bomb by big wave charger Gabe Davies (one of the films production team).
The films Executive Producer, Matt Strathern also submitted a still image for the same XXL category, from the same wave taken from a water angle. Strathern’s shot is co-nominated for O’Flaherty’s wave alongside photographer Christian McCleod’s submission.
This year’s event being held on Friday 04th May in Anaheim, California marks the 12th-annual edition of the Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards, an event open to every qualified surfer at every break on every day of the year, so long as the action is captured by a video or still camera and submitted for judging by the XXL’s voting academy of expert surfers and lensmen. Over 1,000 images were entered into the event before being filtered down to the best five stills and single definitive video clip of each nominated ride.
